Primary Purpose of Organization Unit:
The College of Arts & Sciences is home to fourteen academic departments, the Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies Program, the Health Careers Access Program (HCAP), over 200 full-time faculty members, and about 3,000 of UNCP's total undergraduate and graduate student body. The College offers a wide range of academic disciplines spanning the arts, humanities, social sciences, and STEM disciplines.

Primary Purpose of Position:
This newly created position provides visionary leadership within the College of Arts and Sciences as they will provide strategic planning and oversight of faculty affairs, external funding, and budget stewardship for STEM disciplines. The Associate Dean reports to the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and is responsible for the overall strategic direction of the STEM disciplines, and for enhancing its core missions of learning, discovery, and engagement. The Associate Dean will supervise the chairs of the following departments: Biology, Chemistry and Physics, Geology and Geography, Mathematics and Computer Science, and the Health Careers Access Program.

Job Description:
This 12-month full-time position will join the College of Arts & Sciences (CAS) Office in the leadership, strategic planning, and academic oversight of its constituent units.

Leadership and Academic Oversight
Understand the opportunities and challenges facing public universities in the current higher education landscape and possess the skills, leadership, and vision to advance the STEM disciplines at UNCP in this complex environment.
Provide vision and leadership for educational innovation and foster an environment of the highest expectations in teaching, service, and research.
Lead the efforts for program development, curricular enhancement/development, budget planning, resource development, and assessment of student learning.
Leverage and enhance relationships through effective communication to strengthen internal and external constituents.
Strategize departmental budget requests including non-recurring and all funds budgets through a transparent process.
Work closely with leadership to impact positive relations, faculty development, and an environment that supports continuous change and adaptability.
Develop curricular initiatives to meet growing student demand and industry needs.
Work closely with faculty to envision new academic programs or modes of delivery that will draw additional enrollments to STEM.
Orchestrate MOUs and articulation agreements with other educational institutions such as high schools, community college partners, and four-year institutions.
Collaborate with the Academic Support Council, Center for Student Success, Registrar's Office, and Academic Affairs to resolve student success challenges.
Collaborate with Enrollment Management and Registrar's Office to execute marketing activities to increase awareness of STEM programs contributing to enrollment goals.
Devise and lead divisional initiatives to enhance community engagement
Leverage resources to increase recruitment and retention of students by leading faculty and student engagement initiatives.

Strategic Planning for Research and Fiscal Development
Lead the STEM division in the acquiring of new resources to continue to attract the strongest students and faculty, develop and support programs and research initiatives, and be prepared to meet future challenges.
Work collaboratively with the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences to achieve strategic plan objectives by advocating for resources.
Champion a significant increase in externally funded projects focused on pure research, applied scholarship, pedagogy, curriculum, etc. through the identification of opportunities, crafting compelling proposals/applications, and managing post-award activities in close collaboration with the Office of Sponsored Research.
Engage in strategic planning and establishing a vision for STEM disciplines that strengthens UNCP's dedication to successful career pathways for students and faculty.
Lead the effort to promote a robust culture of research and scholarship in the disciplines by identifying, developing, and managing grants and public programming in collaboration with faculty and the Office of Sponsored Research and Programs.
Review grants for viability, compose letters of support, and approve proposals.
Ensuring effective grant implementation and adherence to project goals and timelines.

Hiring and Evaluation of Faculty
Manage faculty affairs including collaborating with Academic Affairs to monitor adherence to the faculty evaluation cycle, conducting annual faculty evaluations and making recommendations to the dean regarding tenure, promotion, and post tenure review, and addressing any disciplinary actions.
Develop the leadership skills of all faculty through effective role modeling and coaching.
Direct the recruitment of faculty ensuring compliance with university policies.
Supervise the faculty evaluation process leading to increased faculty productivity.
Resolve faculty complaints/concerns in compliance with university policies.
Devise and lead divisional communication and engagement initiatives .
Implement assessment measures and methodologies in conjunction with faculty and Academic Affairs.
Promotes a climate that is welcoming and inclusive and one in which all individuals experience being a valued member of the community.
