Associate Dean, U.A. Whitaker College of Engineering

Job Summary
The U.A. Whitaker College of Engineering (WCE) at Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU) invites applicants for Associate Dean appointment, starting July 2025. Although all areas within the purview of the college administration will be considered, we are particularly interested in candidates with a background and experience in academic/program support and student affairs. We seek individuals with enthusiasm for program development, program review, curriculum offering, student advisement and improving the learning environment, associated college budgeting, and indirect supervision of the teaching, research, and service activities of the faculty within the college. The successful candidate should be eligible for appointment at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor at FGCU. This position directly reports to the dean and will be an integral member of the college leadership, including contributing to the strategic priorities.

Candidates are expected to have an earned doctorate in engineering, computing, construction management, or another closely related field, at the time of appointment. Clear evidence of progressively responsible managerial experience is essential. The ideal candidate would have experience in a wide variety of program-specific accreditations (ABET, ACCE and/or NAAB).

Job Description

Typical duties may include but are not limited to:
  • Assists in the leadership and administration within the College in accordance with established guidelines, university policy, and governmental regulations.
  • Represents the College in the absence of the Dean and works with the Dean in developing the College's mission, vision, and goals.
  • Works with department chairs, directors, and other leaders in the College and the University to identify opportunities for innovation, collaboration, and interdisciplinary work that benefit faculty and students and raise the visibility of the College and its disciplines.
  • Works with department chairs, directors, and other leaders in the College to prepare course scheduling and academic and co-curricular activities of the College.
  • Advises and assists in the planning and development of the college.
  • Assists in developing and improving college policies, procedures, rules, and regulations and ensures compliance with existing policies and practices.
  • Assists the Dean in establishing and maintaining positive relations with various populations and constituencies, including students, faculty, staff, community partners, alumni, donors, supporters, and external agencies.
  • Assists with the development of curriculum, new program development and approval, accreditation and faculty matters.
  • Provide leadership in the accreditation process, including oversight of self-studies and site visits and the preparation of all administrative reports bearing on programs within the College.
  • Maintains academic affiliation in a unit within the College aligned with their disciplinary background.
  • Maintains professional skills through regular professional development, and other activities appropriate to higher education faculty.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


Additional Job Description

Required Qualifications:
  • An earned Doctorate in engineering, computing, construction management or a closely related field;
  • Must possess a minimum of 18 graduate credit hours in the discipline from a regionally accredited institution;
  • A minimum of 2 years of progressively responsible managerial and leadership experience in academic programs, department and/or college;
  • A record of teaching, scholarly, and service contributions that merits appointment at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor in an appropriate academic discipline within the university.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • A minimum of 3-5 years of progressively responsible managerial and leadership experience in academic department and/or college.
  • Educational background and disciplinary expertise directly related to the academic programs in the College.
  • Professional registration, licensing or the ability to become licensed, or certifications related to the engineering, computing and/or construction management discipline.
  • Relevant professional and industry experience in the United States or comparable international experience.


Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
  • Understanding of higher education administration, including accreditation processes, budget management, and institutional policies;
  • Knowledge of curriculum development, assessment, and educational and accreditation standards specific to engineering, computing and/or construction management degree programs;
  • An ability to lead, motivate and collaborate with faculty, staff, and students and to establish relationships internally as well as to successfully develop relationships and interact with external industry partners and the Southwest Florida community;
  • An ability to communicate effectively, work in a highly collaborative academic environment, conduct themselves professionally, and perform appropriate service functions at the college and university level;
  • Skills in developing and/or implementing strategic plans to advance the college and university's mission and goals;
  • Skills in mentoring faculty, staff and students, providing guidance and support for professional development and career growth;
  • An ability to foster a climate of academic excellence, collaboration and interdisciplinary initiatives.

Appointment will be made at an out-of-unit faculty rank commensurate with the candidate's experience on a 12-month out-of-unit multi-year appointment basis beginning as early as in July 2025.
