Job Description:

The School of Human Protective Services is hiring a full-time Fire Services Instructor. This position is responsible for instruction of Fire Services at the college level. This includes developing and/or delivering relevant and progressive curriculum, designing, and implementing effective learning strategies and environments, delivering instruction of high quality, assessing student learning, advising students, and participating in college service activities at the department, school and college levels. Teaching assignments may include Fire Academy lead, Fire Protection Technician associate degree program classes and/or Fire Service non-degree classes. Classes are offered in-person and online, days and evenings.

This position reports to the Dean of the School of Human Protective Services.

Full-time faculty work a nine-month contract for the academic year (Fall and Spring semesters), and teaching summer courses, if available, is optional with additional pay.

Our goal is to conduct virtual interviews the week of November 18, and second round in person interviews, on or around December 4th with an expected start date of January 6, 2025.

Essential Duties:
  • Facilitate student learning by developing appropriate instructional strategies to fit students' needs to support student engagement.
  • Evaluate student performance and provide regular feedback in courses taught by the instructor.
  • Contribute to student success and retention by advising students with course selection, career concerns, internships, and other matters.
  • Serve as an advocate for students and engages in activities that help students achieve their goals such as writing letters of recommendation, and/or helping students link with internships, service learning, job shadowing and other forms of networking.
  • Provide support to the program, the school, and the college by attending and engaging in events and meetings and participating fully within the team environment.
  • Continually revises curriculum to improve student learning.
  • Continually improve teaching through professional development activities and the integration of new techniques and technology. This includes the development and implementation of individualized professional development plan.
  • Maintain a commitment to the college mission, vision and values. Comply with college policies, directives, and work rules.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Skill in communicating effectively and professionally, both orally and in writing.
  • Demonstrated skill in communications and human relations with populations of diverse socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds and persons with disabilities.
  • Demonstrated commitment to excellence in teaching and learning. This includes, but is not limited to, knowledge/experience with current educational methods/strategies such as learner-centered instruction, active learning, assessment, evaluation, collaborative techniques, and strategies aimed at closing the achievement gaps across race, gender, class, and disability.
  • Desire and ability to teach courses at both the collegiate transfer and technical/occupational program levels.
  • Ability to communicate complex and difficult concepts and ideas to students with varied backgrounds and levels of preparedness.
  • Ability to learn new and emerging technologies and incorporate them into the classroom and curriculum. Experience with or willingness to learn different modes of instruction (online, hybrid, Classroom Live, and modes of the future).
  • Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues on course and program promotion, direction, and innovation.


Minimum Qualifications:

*Bachelor's Degree in any field and two (2) years (4,000 hours) in the fire service field.

OR

*Associate degree in field and completion of bachelor's degree in any field within three years

of hire. (Madison College offers tuition reimbursement), and five (5) years (10,000 hours) experience in the fire service field.

Licensure:

*Certified Wisconsin Fire and Emergency Services Instructor (FESI) with the Wisconsin Technical College System (WTCS) or enrolled in the course within 60 days of hire AND prior to beginning lead instruction in certification classes. Must maintain FESI Certification with the WTCS.
