Contra Costa College is accepting applications for part-time Assistant Professors in the English Department at Contra Costa College. The position entails teaching literature and composition classes in both on-campus and online modalities.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Adjunct Faculty duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:
1. providing instruction in accordance with established curriculum, course outlines and class schedules;
2. creating and maintaining an environment which emphasizes learning, encourages free discussion of ideas and critical thinking;
3. evaluating progress of students concerning educational matters and grades student work;
4. meeting with students outside of class;
5. maintaining appropriate standards of professional conduct and ethics;
6. maintaining current knowledge in the subject matter areas;
7. fulfilling professional responsibilities of a part-time/temporary faculty member;
8. maintaining accurate academic records;
9. performing other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualification-Education/Experience:
Understanding of and sensitivity to the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, sexual orientation and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, staff and faculty.

EDUCATION The applicant must possess one of the following qualifications:
  1. A valid community college instructor credential authorizing full-time instruction in EnglishOR
  2. A master's degree in English, literature, comparative literature, or composition OR
  3. A bachelor's degree in any of the above AND a master's degree in linguistics, TESL, speech, education with a specialization in reading, creative writing, or journalism OR
  4. The equivalent. (If you are applying for equivalency, please attach the Master's Degree Discipline Equivalency form contained in the application packet.)


Desirable Qualifications:
Ideal candidates will possess extraordinary interpersonal skills, leadership qualities, a passion for teaching, and the ability to effectively communicate with students to help them achieve their educational goals.
  1. Theoretical and philosophical grounding in teaching reading and composition, including specialized training, experience, and expertise in teaching reading, composition, and Literature at both 1st and 2nd Year levels in both on-campus and online modalities.
  2. Understanding of and sensitivity to diverse populations.
  3. Experience, ability, and enthusiasm to teach English courses in composition and/or literature to diverse student populations at the community college level with a demonstrated commitment to working with students at the freshman composition level.
  4. Familiarity and experience with efforts and strategies to help close the achievement gap.
  5. Ability and willingness to modify your personal teaching style based on feedback and current research in effective teaching strategies.
